Our next stop is at a famous restaurant in Chiang Rai, where we’ll enjoy a Thai lunch. Vegetarian options are available. After freshing up, it’s time to visit the black house of Chiang Rai. The house was built by the national artist Thawan Duchanee and serves as a museum as well. It has an impressive collection of animal remains. Think of shark jaws, snake skins and elephant bones. The way they are displayed is an art in itself. The black house is constructed as a Thai temple.
Our next stop is a visit to the hill tribes of Akha and Karen. The Akha are a colorful tribe living in the rural north of Chiang Mai. The Karen are well known for the rings around their neck to make them seem longer. Hence the name ‘long necks’. See them in their own environment and stroll around their village for some colorful photos.
We then head back to Chiang Rai to explore the city itself and visit its most famous temple: Wat Pra Keaw. When we exit the temple it’s time to check in to our 3* hotel in Chiang Rai city. The rooms have private bathrooms and air conditioning, are clean and up to modern standards. At 19:00 we gather again for a dinner in the city. At the end you are free to enjoy the night market or head back to the hotel for some sleep.
Day 2
Our day starts at 8:00 in the morning with a breakfast and checkout from the hotel. The van takes us to Doi Tung to visit the royal gardens. These beautfully maintained gardens are very colorful and an ideal spot for photography lovers. We then continue north into the Golden Triangle, the area where 3 countries meet: Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. We drive towards the Mekong river and get out of the car to board a boat that takes us to an island on the Laotion side of the golden triangle: Don Sao island.
Here we enjoy a delicious lunch and you will have the chance to get a taste of Laos. The restaurant has a beautiful view over the valleys of the golden triangle. When we arrive back at the short, it’s time to visit the famous Opium house. Here you can learn about a darker side of Thai history, when opium trade and use was very prevalent. We then move towards the Singha park farm (yes, you’ll know the name Singha by now) to see hemp grow. It also boasts a great number of activities, fields full of flowers and tea plantations.
Then it’s time to head back to Chiang Mai! The ride there takes around 3 hours and we’ll make a sanitary stop half way. We should arrive in Chiang Mai no later than 19:00, depending on the traffic. We’ll bring you back to your hotel or drop off point. Book this 2 day highlights of Chiang Rai here with us!
